Over the weekend a packed Saxon Gate saw lasers, pyrotechnics, flaring gas jets and a wall of images to a thumping soundtrack.
Earlier scores of youngsters and adults staged an ambitious lantern parade with amazing hand-made illuminated costumes organised by community arts groups Madcap and Festival Road.
Hundreds were enchanted by the ballet dancer suspended beneath the giant glowing Heliosphere balloon, with children eager to catch her hand as she passed above them.
But it was the bewitching Transe Express from France – a colossal 'child's mobile/windchime' with human figures suspended from a giant crane high above the shopping centre and its haunting bell melody and daring trapeze artists, which really stole the show.
Afterwards a spokesman for the organisers said they were delighted with the response from the public.
